Two Outdoor Living Projects Awarded Some of the Best in the Nation for Woman Owned, KC Company

Determination and an unwavering dedication to breaking barriers in the Kansas City landscape scene has paid off for High Prairie Outdoors. For the first time, Kansas City has two projects named as some of the best in the nation for residential landscape design/build. The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) has awarded High Prairie Outdoors Awards of Excellence in the $50,000-$100,000 and $500,000 Residential Design/Build categories.

When asked why this is a big deal, owner Robyn Schmitz said: “Why is this a big deal? For two reasons:

    1. It pays tribute to one of the most talented teams I’ve ever seen. We would not be where we are without every single one of them.
    2. As a college student, I saw these giant east and west coast companies wining these awards and thought to myself… ‘some day’. Today was that day.

We’re not a giant. In fact, we’re a ‘David’ in a sea of ‘Goliaths’ on a national level. Today, the little team won, not once, but twice.”

High Prairie Outdoors is outperforming and outmaneuvering larger companies locally and nationally by focusing on pushing the limits of craftsmanship and design standards in outdoor living. They’ve created their own proprietary hardscape construction process called “The Legacy Method” that combines European and American hardscape building methods resulting in patios and outdoor living spaces that beautifully last years longer than common building practices. Completed projects are intended to age with beauty and lasting durability so that homeowners don’t ever have to build another outdoor living space. The goal is to build things right the first time.

    About High Prairie Outdoors

High Prairie has always believed that the people of Kansas City deserved more than mediocre quality and design. In fact, that’s one of the reasons Schmitz started the company in 2010. She had witnessed several companies, both large and small, cutting corners on quality. To Schmitz, it appeared those corner-cutters were taking advantage of consumers.

Against all odds, Schmitz started out with nothing but a Jeep, her design software, and her education from Kansas State University. She founded High Prairie Outdoors with the intention to raise the bar on quality and design standards for outdoor living in Kansas City while creating a rewarding environment for employees to thrive. Today, High Prairie Outdoors has 35 employees and specializes in the design, construction, and care of custom outdoor living environments and landscapes.

Schmitz wrote a book in 2018 called “Outdoor Living: A Guide to Design, Construction and Budgeting”. The book has been featured in several magazines from East to West coast and has helped countless people understand how to protect themselves by investing wisely when doing outdoor living projects.
